Former senator urged severing Taiwan ties for China ties
Former Senator Hugh Scott said after a China trip he urged President Ford to sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan and normalize with Beijing even if China offered no pledge to avoid force against Taiwan. He hinted Carter could gain broad support if he acted boldly, a view echoed by Kennedy while Goldwater opposed severing ties with Taiwan.

Pentagon disputes NATO defense cost with Aspin estimate
The Pentagon narrows proposed NATO defense spending to 30 billion over five years, disputing Rep. Les Aspin's 46.4 billion figure. It notes costs already in current programs and argues seven percent of defense outlays would not force tax hikes or debt. Aspin blasted the plan as wasteful and illogical.
