Reagan Tuition Plan Won't Aid Needy, UC Says
UC report shows Reagan plan would raise California residents fees to 500 dollars a year, ranking UC near the top for public universities. It cautions the plan alone won’t boost enrollment of low income students without strong counseling and targeted need based aid. The CEEB study backs reshaped aid on need rather than merit and urges reorganized programs to eliminate aid for those with little need.

House approves large veterans bill without dissent
A compromise 285.6 million dollar bill to provide educational pension and insurance benefits for veterans passed the House 404 to 0, sending it to the Senate. It would affect about 500,000 for education and 2.5 million for pension and insurance, with education for those serving after July 30, 1955 and training benefits covered for the first time. Pensions would rise about 5.4 percent on average to meet cost of living, widows by 8.5 percent, and Spanish American war widows gain 5 dollars per month. All authorizations for the year started July 1 are subject to later appropriations.
