Amateur freeman escapes Alcatraz in self styled case
Charles Benton Russell, 29, an amateur lawyer and jailbreaker, walked out of Alcatraz after a 740 to 1 gamble won on appeal. He served six years for interstate transportation of a stolen car, an escape from Reno, and possession of an unregistered sawed off shotgun. The court found the shotgun law unconstitutional, freeing him. He wore a blue prison suit and gray fedora, saying he read law for five years and got the idea from a similar case. Government auditor Walter H. Henson testified Humphrey earned over 2.3 million in dividends, stock value rising 33.7 million during his tenure, and that he could keep holdings as Treasury secretary with less conflict than cashing out.
