Major Effort To Save Migratory Birds In California
Federal and state agencies launch a cooperative program to protect waterfowl along the Pacific flyway after an outbreak of botulism has killed an estimated 10,000 birds in California. Helicopters and aircraft with shotgun shells are used to disperse birds from 47,000 acres of marshland and a hospital is set up at Kern National Wildlife Refuge near Bakersfield. The effort, directed by Allan Studholme and Secretary of the Interior, aims to preserve habitat and prevent a larger die-off as Army manpower is mobilized to aid in the mission.
