Moderate Labor Bill Voted Down in House Debate
The House Labor Committee, pressed by Representative Barden, urged passage of the Griffin-Landrum bill while criticizing a administration backed alternative. Brademas warned the coalition plan risks creating no real labor law, arguing it would court Hoffa and differ markedly from the Senate’s prior action. The pained division drew cheers from Republicans and Southern Democrats as debate closed.

Senate Upholds veto of 1.3 billion housing bill
The Senate voted 55 to 40 to uphold President Eisenhower's veto of the 1.375 billion housing bill. Ten Democrats, mostly from the South, joined 30 Republicans in backing the veto, with two Republicans opposing. The measure would have funded housing programs and included loans for college construction and special housing arrangements. The vote allows the Bank Subcommittee to pursue a pared-down bill at about 1.05 billion.
