Dayton Fire Strike Leaves Widow, Tenants Homeless
Grace Grether, a 6 year old widow in South Dayton, watched as her four unit building burned while firemen picketed. Across a brick alley, the fire destroyed the block three blocks from a firehouse, leaving about 20 people homeless as 60 hours of strike drama followed failed bargaining. The city offered a smaller raise, around 18 cents, and some officers expected no new walkouts before Sunday.
