Crews Battle Brush Fire Near Riverside, 29 Hurt
Flames thundered across Ortega Road above Lake Elsinore as a major brush fire menaced 250 homes. Ray Shannon and fellow crewmen hid in their pumper as fire licked the truck, burning paint, gear, and canteen straps. 29 firefighters were injured over the weekend, four still critical, as 500 firefighters fought the blaze that consumed 1,600 acres. Two Forest Service veterans Rusty Brooks and Ben Slater died in the effort.
