Speed Run Marred by Wild Spin at Edwards Air Force Base
Mickey Thompson, exhot rodder, aimed for a new land speed record in his Thompson Challenger at Edwards Air Force Base. While trialing, a bump lifted the car into a 60 foot airborne spin at over 200 mph. The tires wore to the cords, but Thompson regained control and stopped. He planned to reattempt if more tires were available, noting Edwards may not be ideal. Thompson built a four engine 500 horsepower Pontiac powered car, targeting 400 mph at Bonneville in September to surpass John Cobb’s 344 mph mark set in 1987.
