Miami Beach reports reveal second ballot jitters in California's Reagan delegation after a heated caucus on whether delegates must stay strictly with the governor now that he is a presidential candidate. Some delegates fear defections to Nixon or Rockefeller, while Johnson questions his commitment after Reagan named Reed as successor.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller arrived late to a Michigan GOP delegation meeting in Miami Beach blaming traffic on Collins Avenue. He joked about Nixon as his vice president and clashed with delegates over Reagan's candidacy as Johnson supporters push for unity amid a shifting mood at the convention.
Comsat said over 20 hours of commercial satellite time are booked through August 9 to televise the Republican National Convention to multiple nations. Europe gets 13 hours 25 minutes of color TV and 2 hours 35 minutes of black and white via Early Bird and Atlantic II. Hawaii receives five hours of color TV via Intelsat Pacific II. Japan will receive 40 minutes of color TV via its Tharabki earth station.
