Sears Faces False Advertising Suit Over Sale Prices

California Attorney General Evelle Younger filed in Los Angeles Superior Court charging Sears, Roebuck and Company with false advertising and unfair business practices. The suit alleges Sears advertised reduced prices on goods but used regular prices, and claimed time-limited sales as four days when items were always available at those prices. Deputy AG Peter DeMaura said many appliances were always on sale with fictitious savings. Sears spokesman Don Primrose countered that ads followed FTC guidelines and that the case seeks future clarity on sale price definitions, with the state seeking to prohibit the practices. The complaint covers roughly three years of conduct and cites ongoing negotiations failing to yield a settlement.
