Two young girls from Lakewood were seriously hurt Thursday night when they darted from behind a parked car into the path of a passing vehicle on Dunmead Avenue. Robin Marie Kaup, 5, and Connie Lee Backen, 4, were admitted to St Helen's Hospital in Bellflower after undergoing surgery for head injuries. The driver, Robert D. Sweem, 27, of Paramount, was not cited. Deputies said the children ran directly in front of the auto from behind a parked car.

Unemployment in the Long Beach area rose 7.7 percent in July, the biggest postwar spike since 1957. California’s Employment Department reported 3,49 new s of Employment and 1313 Powerware applications, with 42,243 jobless in July. The rise marks 944 more unemployed than June, though fewer people are losing jobs overall, and the department notes improving conditions versus 1958. The area includes Lakewood, Signal Hill, Bellflower and parts of Long Beach. The department emphasizes a partial improvement from earlier years, despite the month’s surge.
