Catalina dreams of buying island and restoring ferry
Beverly Hills developer Hymie Singer told Avalon City Council he plans to buy Catalina Island and refit the 300 foot SS Catalina at auction for 70000. He would dry dock and refurbish the vessel and operate it between the mainland and Catalina or to Ensenada, while expanding entertainment and beaches on the island and piping fresh water from the mainland. He also eyed Marineland and possible ties with Hollywood interests as part of the plan.
