Canners strike to push prices on California fruit
California growers faced a two to three cent rise in fall prices for canned apricots pears peaches and tomato products due to a cannery workers strike though the state agriculture department said inventories would cushion immediate effects. The strike halted picking of extra early peaches in the San Joaquin Valley and caused estimated losses of up to 26 million dollars across cling peaches tomatoes and apricots with wages raised under a new three year contract.
