Harpoon miss sparks protest on Russian whale slaughter

Greenpeace reports a Russian harpoon missed two Canadian divers near Los Angeles as they tried to block a whaling operation. The group says nine ships formed a V and slaughtered 10 to 15 whales, including calves under the IWC limit, over four hours amid rough seas.

Fires threaten Santa Barbara area as blazes burn yards from homes

Two brush fires near Santa Barbara erupted in chaparral within 25 miles of the city, while another fire along Napa wine country spanned over 2000 acres in St Helena and Angwin. In Corona and Newhall crews contained smaller fires as Northern California reported two major forest blazes with hundreds of firefighters and air tankers involved. The Cachuma campground fire north of Lake Cachuma burned 350 acres and was half contained as evacuations occurred earlier.
