The Los Angeles Region Water Quality Control Board proposes an interim five year sewage treatment plan for the Los Angeles Basin with a minimum $339 million cost. Public hearing at 10 a.m. May 5 in Los Angeles, plan must be adopted by month’s end with possible modifications to meet federal requirements.
A city and county sanitation plan outlines future upgrades for sewage treatment in Los Angeles and surrounding districts. It calls for removal of sludge discharges to the ocean, elimination of toxicants at the source, and hefty industry investments to meet new standards. The Long Beach Naval Station and Metropolitan Stevedore Co are named for required waste improvements before connecting to expanded sewers.
Californians for Environmental Quality, a three week old citizens group, said at a Capitol news conference it would push for a bill to streamline state environmental agencies. They announced hiring Sacramento attorney Mike Manley as part time lobbyist to back a measure by Assemblyman Edwin herg to create a statewide Environmental Quality Board replacing the Air Resources Board and related panels.
