Civilian Navy Ship Jobs Push Aimed at Private Yards
The Western Shipbuilders Association backed a resolution urging that 75 percent of Navy repair work be placed in private shipyards. Los Angeles leaders argued smaller yards are failing without government contracts while public yards absorb five times more Navy work. The measure, led by Linvd A Mendeg, aims to save taxpayers millions and boost private enterprise, with copies sent to defense officials and lawmakers. There are ten privately owned shipyards in Los Angeles Harbor, including Todd and Bethlehem Steel.
