South Coast Rep Macbeth Grounds Critics With Brutal Stage
The South Coast Repertory production of Macbeth, directed by David Emmes, delivers a melodramatic yet effective staging. Leslie Jones as Macbeth is eerily mad, Hal Landon Jr. as Banquo is vividly ghastly, and Doug Fairbanks Jr. style swordplay closes the affair with flair. Arthur Koustik and Ron Boussom provide strong support in lighter and harsher roles. The set by Sergio O Cadiz uses Limbo lighting to shift from glen to palace, with drum cues heightening mood. Repeats Thursdays through May 26, appealing to theater students and general audiences alike. Also features a large cast including Jeff MacNeilledge, James Bax, Dennis Lambert, and others.
