Marines Die and 105 Hurt in Da Nang Battle
Forty six Marines were killed and 105 wounded in a weekend battle near Da Nang against North Vietnamese regulars. The enemy suffered 96 killed. US air and amphibious measures were reported to push Communist forces from Hue and Quang Tri. Marine companies were deployed by helicopter and from the sea near the DMZ. B52s bombed targets in Quang Tri and Quang Nam provinces as air strikes continued for a fifth day. Soviet demands urged Thailand to expel US troops. Embassy statements warned that durable peace requires eradicating guerrilla warfare. Congress surveys indicated a tough election year ahead for President Johnson's administration.
