Subotnick Butterflies Trial Expands Concert Testing
The Los Angeles Philharmonic premiered Morton Subotnick's Two Butterflies for Amplified Orchestra at the Music Center with Zubin Mehta conducting. The piece used three high powered speaker arrays paired with Buchla electronics to transform live performance into a synthesized soundscape while performers whispered clapped and played. Subotnick described the work in a brief pre concert talk and the audience largely enjoyed the experimental program which also included Haydn's 22nd symphony and Rachmaninoff's third piano concerto played by Horacio Gutierrez.
