US aide admits stopping probe of Nixon contributor
Senate testimony revealed U S Attorney Harry Steward halted a grand jury inquiry into a 1968 Nixon campaign contributor who was a personal friend. He disputed a Justice Department rebuke and a sworn affidavit alleging political influence in quashing the subpoena. He said he believed the probe was inappropriate for a grand jury and cited his long friendship with Thornton as a reason to avoid testimony.

Nixon aide agrees to testify in ITT inquiry
Presidential assistant Peter M. Flanigan offered limited testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in its ITT inquiry, a move seen as easing approval of Kleindienst as attorney general. The White House warned against broad questioning beyond the limits set, signaling possible executive privilege. Committee leaders prepared a counterproposal on ground rules, with hopes Flanigan will appear, while Democrats aimed to press antitrust policy questions beyond ITT.
