Repair Job Delays Cooper Mission To May Night Launch
CAPE CANAVERAL UPS reports U S astronaut L Gordon Cooper Jr and the Faith 7 spacecraft may miss the May 7 order for 22 orbit Night due to Atlas booster and gyroscope system problems. Internal sources say repair of a nine gyroscope unit could take at least two weeks, pushing the flight toward May 1 or later. NASA would not confirm. A Mercury program leaders meeting was convened to assess the flight status as technicians ship the gyroscope assembly to the manufacturer for repair.
