NATO appoints Dirk A. Stikker as secretary general
Dirk A. Stikker, 64, former Dutch foreign minister and permanent Netherlands representative to NATO, was chosen unanimously by the 15 members to succeed Paul-Hendrik Spaak. The Netherlands Queen Juliana must approve, after which the permanent council will elect him.
