Evelyn Rorabough leads a San Pedro based effort to fund a new facility for mentally retarded children. The Harbor Area Retarded Children's Foundation seeks 153000 with state and federal matching funds possible by May 27. Community donations, local clubs, and governing officials back the plan to replace a decrepit building with space for 100 students from nearby cities.
Long Beach's Pat Ewing and La Mirada's Roberta Ward prepare a Europe tour starting May 11 visiting London Paris and then Barcelona with Pat's retired father in Spain as base. They will explore major cities and lesser sites while Pat's children manage home and care, amid broader summer travel teased by locals including Ann Sylvia and son Tim and cousin Johnny English with plans across Europe and the Mediterranean.
Sixty years of marriage were celebrated by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Brooks of 1338 E. 56th St. at a Sunday reception hosted by their son-in-law and daughter in Long Beach. Married April 17, 1907, in Estevan Canada, they have seven living children, 26 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Brooks is president of North Long Beach Charter 57 and the Grandmothers Clubs of America.
Bachelors and Belles of Tong Beach plan a three day Square Dance Convention in Las Vegas Nevada with 75 members. Reservations are at the Sahara. An April 29 visitation dance titled art's Dance will honor Art Brookhoover and others. On May 1 they move to Long Beach from Highland Park. Johnny completes internship at LA County Hospital and starts residency at Wadsworth Hospital in West Los Angeles as an ENT specialist.
Ellen Kree hosts a Lawry's Corona del Mar dinner with Hans Prager, Edward Shin, and a “food technician” guest. The night featured a dressed salad, sautéed New York strip steaks, green beans almondine, and a luxurious Olde English Trifle as dessert, with banter on entertainment and atmosphere over cooking from scratch.
