Artillery rained on a North Vietnamese infantry push at Patrol Base Diamond near Cambodia, blunting a second attack within 48 hours. The 250 U.S. GI defenders used artillery to repel the assault that sought to overrun the base and block infiltration routes into Saigon.
Northern battlefield actions near an outpost killed at least 20 North Vietnamese as advancing infantry engaged within a quarter to half mile. Da Nang rockets killed six and wounded 40 as homes and an oil warehouse were hit. Peace talks in Paris enter a 13th session with little progress and no private conversation basis reported. Pope Paul VI plans a June Geneva visit to the WCC and ILO. Arab guerrillas join to fight Israel with heavy casualties as Syria rejects a peace plan. Moscow to test rockets over the Pacific mid spring. Prison calm restored in Italian facilities after rioting discloses wide unrest.
A federal judge ruled that a near draft board cannot reclassify a registrant 1A for harming a draft card or other delinquency violations. Noel Eisdorfer, a Queens resident, was found guilty of failing to report for induction but the judge may drop the indictment.
Cambodia resumes diplomatic relations with the United States after Prince Norodom Sihanouk says Nixon pledged respect for Cambodia’s sovereignty within its present frontiers. Sihanouk had cut ties in May 1965 citing alleged U.S. border violations in South Vietnam. He thanked Nixon and the United States for the gesture of justice and fairness.
Alvin Marks, 42 year old psychologist turned pilot, lands in Sacramento after a 14 day round the world light aircraft flight setting a new half speed record. He faced fatigue and coffee and oxygen shortages on the final Pacific leg but cut the previous record by Sheila Scott.
Dr. Margaret Mead says the campus revolution could lead to salaries for students to attend classes anytime anywhere with dignity and security. The remark, made Wednesday, links compensation to flexible schooling.
