Newly Equipped S. Viet Division to Replace Many Yanks at DMZ

South Vietnamese troops armed with M16 rifles will take over sections along the northern frontier from U.S. forces. The 1st Division, about 12,000 men, is retrained and ready to assume duties at Con Thien and Khe Sanh after recent combat near Gia Linh. A government spokesman said the drive ended with 125 enemy killed. Vietnamese losses were 29. U.S. officers have pressed for broader arming and training of the South Vietnamese to share the fighting.

Prisoners Incommunicado In North Vietnam

Miami editor William C. Baggs of the Miami News reported he was barred from seeing American war prisoners in North Vietnam and could not mail letters home. He said talks on prisoner exchange would await broader peace talks and noted few messages passed, with North Vietnam wary of a foreign Red Cross. Baggs cited releases of sick prisoners and unclear totals, mentioning a past three-for-three exchange as the first between the two nations.

In Vientiane Laos a rare in person meeting between a U S and North Vietnamese diplomat occurred. Baggs said some diplomats hoped for a wider prisoner exchange but those hopes faded when a visiting reporter spoke to a Hanoi government minister.
