Republican crime bill introduced in Senate
Liberal Republicans led by Edward Brooke push a new anti crime reform bill in Washington. The measure would raise federal crime spending, set minimum prison standards, guarantee work pay and voting rights after punishment, fund city upgrades, parole hearings, victim compensation, and social security for inmates while studying reforms to criminalize social issues. Co sponsors include Boggs and Javits among others.

Panel approves bill creating prison ombudsman in California
SACRAMENTO UPT The Assembly Ways and Means Committee backed a bill Wednesday to establish an independent ombudsman to investigate state prison complaints. Assemblyman Frank Murphy Jr. said the measure would create a $6000 a year ombudsman subject to legislative ratification. Walter Barkdull warned the move could be very divisive despite Reagan administration objections. The bill, vetoed by Gov. Reagan last year, was sent to the floor on a 12-4 vote.
