On the eighth straight day of fighting around the Dak Seang Green Beret camp 200 miles northeast of Saigon Allied forces fend off Communist units. South Vietnamese officials report 110 North Vietnamese killed and 42 U.S. troops dead with 149 wounded. Cambodian and Israeli actions also feature in this multi theater dispatch.
A strong quake hit Manila and the Philippines on Tuesday causing extensive damage. At least seven people were killed and more than 175 injured, with many deaths in Manila. A transit workers strike closed schools, aiding toll containment. A three story building collapsed during the tremor and vast parts of the city faced panic as residents fled damaged blocks.
The House committee approved President Nixon’s plan to impose a settlement to avert a nationwide railroad strike, with a 15 to 12 vote, while Senate Labor Committee had identical approval a day earlier. Democrats led by Harley Staggers opposed the measure, predicting loss of liberty.

Russian born composer Igor Stravinsky age 87 was rushed to a New York hospital on Tuesday for emergency heart treatment. Launch director Walter Kaptyan announced on Tuesday that Apollo 14 is tentatively set for a 2 to 4 am launch window. The plan would mark the first night time mission for American astronauts with Alan Shepard Stuart Hoesa and Edward Mitch ell aboard.
New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller won a warm endorsement from the Republican Party on Tuesday to seek a fourth term, joined by Lt. Governor Malcolm Wilson. The event drew some boos when U.S. Senator Charles Goodell was mentioned.
