Professor Sees 50-50 Chance of Viet War End Before Elections
Harvard historian Edwin Reischauer, former U.S. ambassador to Japan, says there is a 50 50 chance the United States can end the Vietnam War within six months or be well on the way. He credits President Johnson for enabling a possible negotiated settlement and notes public mood shifting toward peace talks. He foresees a phased cease-fire and a protracted negotiation allowing Saigon to reform and avoid open-ended U.S. backing of its government.
