Crippled DC8 Jet Lands Safely at O'Hare

United Air Lines flight from San Francisco to Chicago with 70 aboard circled for 17 minutes after a hydraulic leak threatened braking power. Capt. M L Hardeman guided the DC 8 to a safe landing as 60 emergency units stood by. Passengers remained calm and reports cited sufficient hydraulic fluid to operate brakes, flaps, and nose steering. Evelio Grifo, a Ford Foundation consultant, quoted the captain’s warning to passengers during the approach.
