Eight lunar landing sites named by NASA planners
National space planners selected eight equatorial locales as the smoothest safest possible Apollo landing sites. The best candidate lies near the Sea of Tranquility east of Maskelyne crater, a flat area with few boulders and shallow craters. Sites span the Moon from Ocean of Storms to Sea of Tranquility with three options per mission for timing sunlight and communications.

A $9 million ATS 2 satellite misfired from launch creating an egg shaped, unstable orbit over Cape Kennedy Florida. Scientists feared loss as engineers attempted salvage while tracing stabilization of the craft using gravity aided booms to reestablish proper orientation.

NASA Shifts in Apollo Fire Aftermath at Houston Center
NASA chief James E Webb outlined changes at the Houston Space Center following the Apollo 1 tragedy that killed three astronauts.
