Solar sunwave duel sparks thunder on the sun
Caltech astronomers report discovery of Stein waves within sunspots moving outward at up to 5 000 miles per hour and 1 600 megameters between crests. These acoustical waves accompany flashes every 214 minutes, suggesting a link to energy release in sunspots and new insights into solar physics.
