County workers propose retirement age cut to 50 in talks

In negotiations on a county management contract, a plan to lower the minimum retirement age from 55 to 50 is under discussion. A no cost argument is raised by employee leaders, while officials say any change hinges on a full benefits package agreement.

A full curtailment could force power plants to burn high sulfur fuel oil, raising sulfur dioxide and particulates and worsening smog. Gas supplies constitute about 70 percent of the county fuel mix, with Alaska and Indonesian fuel oil making up the rest.
