Braden Confirmed by Senate Amid Partisan Debate
The Senate confirmed Braden by a 33 to 7 vote amid sharp partisan exchanges. Senators argued over education policy and alleged political influence in schooling, with Burns defending nonpartisanship and Schrade warning of political impact on students. Conflict of Interest Bills Pass Assembly
The Assembly approved two conflict of interest bills and a reconsideration of a key Brown administration measure. One bill would ban state employees from representing former agencies for two years and require disclosure of interests in bidding firms, while prohibiting voting on such contracts. The session also debated creating a coordinator for a cultural program to aid disadvantaged children, with a GOP compromise allowing governor appointees on an advisory panel. A separate proposal would shift Social Welfare Board powers to a director, making the board advisory.
