Nursing-home probe finds widespread deficiencies nationwide
Federal unanounced inspections of 295 nursing homes across 48 states revealed 64 percent with multiple fire safety violations and 44.3 percent of residents given tranquilizers. Other findings include 15.8 percent needing dental care, 9.5 percent with bed sores, and 74 percent lacking bladder and bowel training. HEW plans a May summary and state-by-state detail later.

Florida doctors threaten April 15 strike over malpractice costs
About 150 of 2,700 Dade County physicians voted to strike April 15 unless the Florida legislature acts to ease soaring malpractice insurance. They planned to travel to Tallahassee on April 9 to demonstrate, and would handle only emergencies after the 15th. Critics warned the move could hurt the elderly, while lawmakers pursued a relief package.
