General warns against U S cutback in European forces
Gen Andrew Goodpaster, supreme allied commander in Europe, warns that any major U S reduction of troops in Europe would harm NATO and U S security. He cites Warsaw Pact superiority and the need for a strong European contribution backed by U S nuclear deterrence. He notes NATO's 20 divisions in Europe fall short of the 1951 target and urges continued American commitment.
