Three Men Fined for Unlawful Possession in Prosecutor Report
George L. Rose paid a $100 fine after confessing to possessing intoxicating liquor in his wagon. Clarence Irwin fined $126 for liquor possession while tow by police. Mrs Troxel, held on similar charges, pleaded guilty after warrant searches found bottles and moonshine in a steaker building apartment.

Portland Man Clarence Barry Drowns near Independence
The body of Clarence M. Barry, 45, of Portland, was found in the river near the Lewishop yard six miles south of Independence. Coroner found no foul play. he likely drowned after an injury days earlier. Survived by three children, brother Charles and sister Edith. Mrs Walsh of Salt Lake City misidentified as mother.

Church Service Held at Werline Yard
A Baptist church delegation visited George Werline and Sloper Bros hop camps last Sunday. Tracts were distributed and plans made for a service. Tuesday night two Baptist church groups attended at Werline place with A. A. Justin on cornet, a male quartet, and Rev Proppe delivering a gospel message. An invitation to hold a service at the Wigrich ranch was accepted.

Barn Fire Destroys Titus Ranch On Salem Road
A fire north of Independence on the Salem road burned the barn at John Titus ranch and the adjoining chicken house. The flames consumed a Studebaker, farming tools, hay and grain while horses in the corral were saved. Titus suspects arson as the cause. windmill and tank also damaged. The property was the old Sperling place.

Few Oregon Men Were Held Captive in World War I
Salem reports that among 34 500 Oregon service members in World War I twelve were prisoners of the German army. Two officers and ten enlisted men were captured and held in camps until after the armistice. one died in German hands. Names are withheld by Gen. White.

Death Claims Julius Stalding in Independence
Julius Stalding 84 a resident of Independence for 12 years died at his home on Monmouth Street after a two week battle with a paralytic stroke. He was born in Germany and came to the United States at 18, living in Iowa and South Dakota before moving to Independence. Surviving are his children Chris, George, Herman, Albert, and Emma plus several daughters in law and a widow. Funeral arrangements were set for Canistota South Dakota with burial there. he belonged to the Odd Fellows in his South Dakota hometown.

The hop harvest lags as pickers remain in short supply across major yards. About 350 workers at Wigrich, far below the needed workforce, with completion forecast in two weeks. Bonuses of 10 cents per box and flat 60 cent rate at Wig rich aim to retain labor. Some yards report high earnings and frequent picker movement driven by autos. The Horst company reports a 12 acre yard yielding around 2700 pounds per acre.

Milford Harvey Crawford 36 shot himself with a 12 gauge shotgun at his Polk county home near Zena. Earlier his wife died from burns in a car gasoline tank explosion linked to a torch incident.
