Reported unrest surrounds Rose's hop yard where about 700 pickers exist against a required 210. The crowd swelled as growers rushed to hire for the season, but rain and overstaffing forced layoffs and tense negotiations with Rose and the Boss Hop Co. in Salem.
Mise Mildred Owen and Dole Pomeroy were married at the Owen parental home in a Sunday noon ceremony officiated by Rev. Clark. The couple will reside in Graye River while Mr. Pomeroy works with a surveying party.
A fight occurred on the Salem road involving Irvine and Charles Devine against a ranger after a dispute over a bogeyard and a man carrying a razor. The Devine Brothers suffered injuries while the stranger, armed with a razor, escaped and has not been heard from.
D J Collins of this city has nearly finished moving to Portland. His wife left for that city earlier and her husband followed Wednesday. Collins is well known here having lived most of his life and recently worked in the fruit business. His river orchard six miles above Independence is famed locally. Both he and his wife will be missed socially and in business circles.
Independence residents report the State Fair is a marked success with most people visiting or preparing to attend. Ten men rate the event highly, calling it the best they have ever witnessed, praising the stock exhibits and fruit displays as well.
