City Council Holds Session Amid Hop Picking Season
The City Council met on Sept. 1 with the mayor and council members present to address sidewalk costs on Monmouth Street, repairs to the jail, and bids for land needed to move a bridge. Remarkable yield reports from Missouri Bottom farms
Farmers on Missouri Bottom across the river from Independence in Marion county report strong yields. D P McCarthy gathered nine tons of hay and 660 bushels of grain from his acres, G L Rose cut 26 acres of oats averaging 80 bushels per acre, and G M Hauser threshed 318 sacks of oats plus 127 bushels of wheat from two acres. The ferry began nightly runs for picker traffic, and locals Charley and Clarence MacCready visited the city while Mrs Tilin and Mrs W H Walker planned Salem trips.

Foolish play leads to toy gun injury in Mulxey family
A man named Frank W. Mulxey gave his four year old a 22 revolver to play with at McLaughlin's hop yards. The child loaded the gun and shot his sister in the cheek. she is healing with a favorable prognosis. Other local accidents include a Parker man injured by a threshing belt incident and a boy near Airlie run over by horses, suffering a deep temple wound and a crushed foot but recovering slowly.
