Harvest of the first sugar beet crop in the Valley began Monday and the yield is larger than expected despite late planting. Once harvested, tonnage and net profits per grower will be reported after expenses. Preliminary tests show yields with about fifteen percent sugar, promising good prices for growers.
The report notes current averages at 17.6 percent and predicts sugar contents will rise after farmers learn irrigation and cultivation methods. It foresees a large acreage expansion next year in this section.
