Portland Lumber Operators Face Conspiracy Prosecution

Prominent Portland timber operators J A Stoddard and Sey mour W Bell along with Hewitt Lumber Co of Tacoma were charged in federal court with conspiracy to obtain timber claims in Baker County. Proceedings began for recovery of timber claims amid claims the act aimed to defraud the government of funds valued at over 10. Charles H H Chance, a US commissioner, was drawn into the scheme and accepted checks for land office fees from nonaccount holders. Some confessions claim checks were not returned, yet patents were issued. Rain halted city sewer ditching work while crews advance on Fifth Avenue and Main Street.
