Near Drowning Incident on Slough Rescue
Last Saturday about 11 00 A M David Hastings drove a wagon into a slough behind J L Hoone’s house. The water was high and swept the wagon from the wagon box. Hastings kept his team afloat and called for help. Assistants eventually reached the scene and managed to get the horses ashore. one animal was barely saved.

Special from Little Lavkinmute reports Tuesday night’s powerful wind storm in Polk County. Observers recall a near cyclone, with fifteen apple trees uprooted in M. Scrafford’s orchard, saddle boards torn from a house, about 40 rods of fencing blown down, and extensive damage across farms. Equipment wrecked, trees toppled, and many windows broken.

Antioch Industry Report on Charter Oak Saw Mill
Special from Antioch notes the Charter Oak saw mill owned by F. J. Oberber now on Mr. Chap Mark's ranch after moving from Airlie in September. Walter Duncan is engineer and Walter Black heads the sawyers. Workers include Asa Burbank Clara Marks Troy Turner Oscar Maguisan John James C. By ern and H. H. Pope. The mill cuts five to six thousand feet daily and recently filled a 4000 plow beam order for Bernicia Agricultural Works in California. Despite strong oak demand, prices were low and profits slim. Oberber visited Sacramento where 9300 men build freight cars for the Southern Pacific.

Daughter Clara White died in Portland age 26. husband and children survived. Burial at Odd Fellows cemetery with Independence neighbors aiding.
