Independence prepares for Armistice Day activities with the American Legion K Company Oregon Guard and Civil War veterans. A 10 to 12 noon program at the school features talks a luncheon, and a trip to Monmouth for ceremonies. Volunteers wear uniforms. G A R guests ride in special cars. a county-wide event with leaders from Independence and nearby towns.

The residence of H. Edge at Hopville was destroyed by fire on Monday. The fire spread rapidly before discovery and the Edge family, including an invalid mother, was removed with difficulty. All household goods burned. there was no insurance and neighbors offer assistance.

Clyde Hull Killed by Accidental Gun Discharge at Fort Russell
Clyde Hull son of Elmer Hull of Independence died from an accidental gun discharge at Fort Russell Wyoming last Friday. The 25 year old Army veteran served a second enlistment and four years, including 14 months in the Philippines. He is survived by his parents and three sisters Mrs Clara Breed Mrs Laura David of Astoria and Mrs May Walker of St Johns. Burial was in Odd Fellows cemetery with Methodist service conducted by Rev me. Pallbearers were American Legion members Abe Becker A L Hallander Glenn Smith and R H Walker. The Hulls had lived in Cottage Grove before moving to the north part of town about a year ago.

Dependence Tax Levy Set by City Council
The regular monthly meeting focused on the 1920 tax levy. General municipal funds were set at 8861.08, street improvements 4965.27, with 2171.85 for street intersection bonds and 2413.17 plus 241.82 for library maintenance refinancing. Total assessed value is 482,635. Various bills were approved including G. H. Wood repairs and fire department costs, Mt States Power charges, and recorder and marshal fees. A light at Fifth and E streets was requested but no action taken.

High School Boys Raise Over 200 dollars for Gym Plans
High school students organized a drive after postponing the gymnasium project. They raised over 200 dollars and are negotiating use of either the opera house or the old gym building on Main street. The North Main building is offered rent free but requires repairs. the opera house may be secured. A long list of local donors supported the effort.
