Fire destroys two Mall street buildings in March inferno
A Tuesday morning fire of unknown origin consumed two adjacent structures on Mall street near C street, damaging one building’s contents and forcing evacuations. Grimes Brothers operated a bar alley in the start building. Butler’s Insurance Office occupied the adjoining frame structure. Firefighters, aided by Oregon Power Company manager Blenis, prevented wider destruction including the opera house block. Early theories point to a cigar tossed into a wood box by a Corellas smoker. the full cause remains undetermined.
