Beet Growing Gives the Farmer a Cash Crop

A Sugar Company official advocates extensive prep of sugar beet land, detailing spring and fall tillage, harrow use, mulch formation, and moisture retention to boost yields on heavy soils. He cites tests showing 2–3 ton gains per acre and beets valued at seven dollars per ton, urging early, thorough surface work and coordinated harrowing if needed.

Sugar Beet Factory Promised by Utah Idaho Sugar Company

Independence Oregon March 12 1917 Utah Idaho Sugar Company proposes to erect a sugar beet factory near Independence within five years. Farmers in a 26 mile radius must grow at least 1500 acres in 1917 and 3000 acres in 1918 with 35000 tons of beets yearly, under standard company contracts, price 50 cents per ton less until factory is built.

Electric trains to run Portland to Corvallis by May 6

Southern Pacific plans electric service from Portland to Corvallis via Independence with trains starting around May. J H Dyer cites delays in motorized equipment from eastern manufacturers but says pole line, overhead construction, and substations are nearly complete. Terminal work at Corvallis and routing toward Eugene are projected with electrification extending within a year or two.

Second Sugar Factory Planned in Yakima Valley

North Yakima farmers shift to sugar beets as the Utah Idaho Sugar Company expects a second factory next year if current tonnage fills the first's capacity. Agriculurist Mark Austin from Salt Lake notes the valley may support three factories of this size and urges expanding acreage to bury the first with 50 000 tons of beets.
