Will Erect Bit Building Soon in Independence

A large brick structure will rise south of the Opera House block in Independence within ninety days from the contract date. J Hirschburg plans a 40 by 60 foot main store with offices above and a lower floor leased to F B Wetherbee and partners for a large merchandise store shifting from Eugene. Wetherbee aims for a top south Portland level store, with steam heat and modern features, opening by September first.

Change In Time Card for Illinois & Michigan Railroad

The Illinois and Michigan Railroad announces a timetable adjustment to take effect next Sunday. The Salem evening train from Independence departs at 4 30 pm reaching West Salem at 6 10 pm, with return at 6 30 pm to connect with the Southern Pacific crossing train and deliver mail and passengers to Independence by 7 15 pm, saving 1 hour 15 minutes between Portland and Independence. The Dallas morning train shifts to 6 00 am from 6 15 am.

Tripp Rescues Man From Train Wheels Near Amity

A man fell toward the wheels of a northbound passenger train on the Southern Peeble road near the Hotel Independence. Local resident Mr. Tripp, credited with saving the man, wrestled him to safety as the train pulled into town. The rescuer’s identity is undisclosed. the home area is thought to be near Amity.

Arrest of Clink Mosellon By City Marshal

City Marshal Tupper received a telegram from Newport officials requesting search and arrest of Clink Mosellon. He was captured and held in the city jail until officers arrived yesterday and returned him to Newport. The reason for the warrant remains unclear.

Lien Filed Against Local Property Over Lumber Sale

Spaulding Logging Company files suit in county court against J G Melutosh and J R Bite to recover over 400 for lumber used in building a small house in the northwest city portion. A lien on the property is claimed. Another action against G L Long involves a garage building on Math Street.

Beautiful Display of Roses at Presbyterian Fair

Roses and decorations at the annual fair in the opera hall under the Needweratt of the Presbyterian church drew a large crowd Monday. Ladies prepared festive exhibits and prize ribbons were awarded for best collections and floral samples, with Mrs Butler and Mrs Knox among the top winners.

Agent Returns After Prolonged Southern Trip

Lee Wilkinson and his wife returned Wednesday evening from an extended South and East trip lasting several weeks. Wilkinson reports a pleasant journey and is glad to be back in Independence. He has resumed duties as agent for the Southern Pacific Railway Company.

Serious Injury After Fall At Independeive Creamery

Serious injuries reported after Alva Lockridge, a young Maal employee at the Independent Creamery, fell on the door stairs while wheeling a truckload of sett. He was taken home in a Wack where medical aid was given, but the injuries caused him much suffering.

Old Resident H. K. Smith Dies in Independence

H. K. Smith born Newark November 8 1850 died June 16 1002 at his home in Independence. He lived in Oregon since 1878 after marriage to Ella Zooksman Browers ville and father to four children Pear Cora Raysa and the youngest. Funeral at 2 p m Tuesday conducted by Rev F N Sandifur with interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery south of the city.

Death of Ashland Resident William Patterson Sudden

Mrs. C H Percival received a telegram this week informing her of the death of her father William Patterson a well known Ashland citizen. Mrs Patterson was at her daughter's home when the news came and left for Southern Oregon immediately. Patterson died suddenly said to be from apoplexy.

Brooklyn Law School Admits 23 in 1918 Class

Edwin W. Wallace of this city earned the Bachelor of Laws degree with the 1923 cohort. He now resides in Rockville Centre, New York, where he previously moved after his father's death and serves on the village board of trustees, reportedly the youngest village officer on Long Island.
