Twenty Years of Married Life Celebrated in China
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Putnam observed their twentieth wedding anniversary at their farm home with relatives arriving by carloads for the early morning celebration. The meet included many Putnam family members and friends from Portland Wisconsin and India. In council news Mayor Eldridge presided as a long session tackled street improvements park line ordinances and city staffing with votes to hire a laborer and approve park width changes. W. E. Campbell elected to replace J. E. Hubbard as alderman and Walker Whitney’s request to move a saloon was denied. The marshal was tasked with brush removal and sewer and street concerns were discussed before adjournment.

Smith Widow Esther Barney Mourns Independence Pioneer
Silas W. Smith longtime merchant and former mayor of Independence Oregon died May 26 at his Wash. home after years of illness. Born August 16, 1884 in Warren County Illinois he moved with parents to Oregon in 1853 and later to Walla Walla then back to Independence. Survived by Esther Barney his wife and six children, with many local friends noting his civic service and upright character. Interment was in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
