Eugene MacCarthy seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Donald P MacCarthy rode a pony that refused to heed him. After failed persuasion he used a persuader and the pony bolted through the yard toward a hay field. The boy jumped to a hayrack and saved himself, saying he sought safety first.

Car Hits S P Train at Second and Monmouth
J M Clark of 1870 Macadam St Portland drove into a Southern Pacific electric train at Second and Monmouth. Both he and his wife were unharmed though Mrs Clark was briefly hysterical. The Clark car suffered front-wheel damage and the Espee coach sheeting tore loose. The train, arriving from Portland at 7 20, was slowing for the station. Clark says he did not see the train until contact. The train carried the car a short distance before skidding it into the cars. SP claim agent &. P. Stewart rode the train and investigated overnight. Clark car to Halliday Wood Justin shop for repairs.

The long wooden bridge north of Ed Steele’s place on the Monmouth Benton county road is completed with painters finishing. It runs about 900 feet in 16 spans of 19 feet each on piling to vent flood water. initial 150 foot bridge proved inadequate, doubling length after high water. Contractor Trent works at Helmick cut and aims to finish by month end.

Death Ends Parker Store Owner George F. Chapin
George F. Chapin died at his Parker home Tuesday forenoon after a ten day paralytic illness that followed a stroke. He was 72, born July 4, 1852 in Palmyra Wisconsin. survived by wife Elizabeth Barth and six children. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church with a quartet and pianist. interment in Odd Fellows cemetery. Chapin had lately run a small store and was known as “Dad” in the community.

Polk County plans to sell 53000 in bonds with 40000 earmarked for the Holmes Gap to Benton county line highway and 13000 for the Dallas Salem route. Critics say previous bond issues for road work lacked concrete plan and question legality of Pacific highway description on the ballot. H M Witherow wire chief at Independence and Monmouth for Willamette Telephone company has been promoted to the Tacoma office of Northwestern and left Wednesday to begin new duties. Mrs Witherow and children stayed with Portlana relatives during the transfer and the change is spoken of kindly. Guy Newton succeeds him, an Independence boy and son of W W Newton, who has moved his family to occupy the Verd Hill house on C street between Second and Third.

H. E. Rideout a Greenwood dairy farmer operates a cottage cheese plant on his farm after several years in Portland. He plans to expand from Salem to Independence Monmouth and Dallas and recently bought a delivery car. The plant uses milk from 25 cows and converts separated milk into cottage cheese by adding cream, with a 350 pound daily capacity.
