A Polk County case challenges state highway plans to route the Pacific highway via Dallas and Independence. Judge McCourt notes funding and legal constraints, with orders to complete Holmes Gap road and disputes over road designation and timing amid ongoing injunctions and appeals.
Fire last evening damaged part of the Conkey residence after an ironing board ignited from a hot iron left on a covered chair. Family returned to Dallas for a short time and helped extinguish the flames with minor injuries to a worker.
From Silverton to Vancouver Washington and back. Boyd Brown and Claud Quackinbush arrive in town for visit with Mr Brown’s parent. Brown seeks re entry into aviation as first lieutenant after examinations in Vancouver. Brown was an early aviation enlistee and Mexican border volunteer. prior plane tied to Webfoot in Salem. discussed second plane wreck in Dallas.
D B Fletcher Sam Irvine spent the Fourth at Toledo and Newport. Mr and Mrs Skinner and daughter Alice and Faith Jean Kimball visited Belknap Springs on the McKenzie east of Eugene from Saturday to Monday. John Bohannon and family joined relatives at Corvallis for the day war event at Mary's Peak. C O Sloper Robbie and wives returned from a two day fishing trip in Tillamook county with rough roads and few worthwhile fish. A C Moore wife and children spent Monday with A J Spong north of Salem. They were joined by Mr and Mrs Sam Elliott and daughter of Corvallis who arrived Sunday. A novel night featured hundreds of Chemawa Indian school children bathing in the river. Dinty was temporarily adopted for an amature photo.
Frank Williamson endured a bad ax cut to his left foot at Julius Weinert's Airlie camp on Thursday. He is now on crutches recovering from the accident.
Miss Lola Rickard and Miss Mary Williams two Independence teachers captured a bear using fishing rods during an Alsea country outing with a group including Mr. and Mrs. James Cooper and Miss Genevieve Cooper. One stood guard while the other fetched a man with a gun. the bear was treed and secured.
The Siletz Logging and Lumber Company will begin construction of a new sawmill at Camp One in Independence. The electrically equipped plant will handle big timber with a daily capacity of 160000 feet and is expected to start operation about two months after completion.
Miss Katherine Arbuthnot gave readings at the chapel hour. Many Normal students spent the weekend at homes or nearby resorts while others stayed in Monmouth for social activities and chautauqua tickets. Edna Mills and Max Ricker announce their July wedding in Forest Grove. they will reside in Portland. The summer session sees strong student effort and a six week second period for required training. A motion picture “orangeline” screens July 10 with Miss Parrish to provide music. a calendar lists further chapel hours and performances through July 30.
J E Halsley of Standard Oil disputes Oregon Dealers Association findings on no gasoline shortage. He cites government data and interstate commerce reports, notes price cuts were limited, and warns against unfounded propaganda. He says deliveries from outside points occurred to relieve shortages as Oregon harvests begin and urges cooperation.
Twelve men of K company under Sergeant Erwin Stewart left Monday for Camp Lewis. They stopped in Portland en route and reached the camp the next day. Capt. Stdd and Lt. Mix could not go. The unit will remain at Camp Lewis until July 20 and return home the day after.
Charles Lovell moves from Kings Valley to Independence after selling his Kings Valley farm. He has leased property until fall and bought the Fitchard place crop north of town.
A 40-cent classified ad in the Enterprise sold a mowing machine and lumber wagon for El mer Addison of the Moore and Addison Furniture Co. The purchaser was H. J. Powell of Pedee. These implements Mr Addison had on hand when he retired as a farmer and became a furniture man.
J. W Kay cultivates 160 acres north of town planted with clover and in excellent condition. He recently moved from Tillamook county and praises crop prospects. After wartime shift to wheat, local growers return to clover as a lucrative cash crop with indications of strong yields this fall.
Last Saturday marked the first lesson of the new quarter for the Seventh Day Adventist Sabbath school and new officers were elected. Superintendent Mrs. Rideout. Assistant Superintendent Robert Strong. Secretary Treasurer Mrs. Peas. Assistant Secretary Treasurer Mrs. Slack. Pianist Miss Rideout. Eld er J. A. Rieber of Forest Grove in charge.
T Goodman acquires the G P Looney 52 acre tract one half mile northwest of Independence for 85500. Independence Realty Company handled the deal. Goodman already leases a farm south of town and plans to build on the Looney property next year as his eventual home.
S H McElmurry closed a deal adding 92 acres south of town for his son Oren, buying from Chas Leoboldt and his sister of Salem. C E Burroughs purchased about 80 acres and buildings of the Stapleton estate south of Independence. D W Nekells sold his Buena Vista farm to a Mr Frank residing near Salem with possession this fall.
Independence bankers in a narrow escape after their car, a new Nash owned by Ira Mix, overturned between Salem and Woodburn last Saturday. H. Hirschberg president of the Independence National Bank, Ira Mix cashier, and Dr. Dunsmore were in the party. They were briefly pinned but suffered only minor bruises. The incident occurred when another driver hogged the road forcing a skid on loose gravel. Passersby aided, the car was righted and the trip to Portland resumed. Mix drove to Tacoma the next day for auto races on July 5.
Local notes describe Parker haying season and numerous visits and trips. Families from Salem Eugene Portland Calgary and Monmouth are mentioned with picnics at Helmick's Bridge and Luckinmute. The Co operative Thresher Company held its annual meeting naming P. T. Peterson Horton and Dickin son to the board.
Corvallis is scheduled to come here Sunday for a game against the Tigers. The match will begin at 2 30 in the afternoon and is expected to draw strong local interest.
