Pioneer Abraham Nelson Dies in Independence

Abraham Nelson, a Polk county elder and longtime farmer near Independence, died Monday January 20 1919 at his Fourth and Monmouth street home. Born October 29 1839 in Van Buren county Iowa he freightered to Idaho before settling in Oregon in 1866. He helped build the local school and supported the State Normal, leaving a wife Sarah E Henkle two children Ross and Mrs C D Butler a grandson Dr Maurice J Butler and a great grandson. A private funeral was held at his home attended by church members, with burial in the IOOF cemetery.
