About 1500 in prizes will be awarded to Oregon public school pupils in grades five through eight for essays on The Teeth and Their Relation to Good Health. Contests divide by two grade bands with word limits of 400 for lower grades and 600 for older pupils. Machinery shed and threshing outfit burned near Independence
A 50 foot square machinery shed on M. R. Black’s ranch about three miles NW of Independence burned early last Saturday morning. The loss was about 5000 with little insurance and the outfit belonged to O. W. Stevens now hard to locate. Incendiary suggestion arises as nearby dynamite was stored and past barn fires weigh in.

Oregon Pioneer A J Richardson Dies At 86 In Independence
A J Richardson longtime Oregon pioneer dies at his Sixth street home Wednesday January 18 at age 86 after a brief illness. Born May 11 1835 in Mount Desert Maine he traveled from California to Oregon in 1862 with wife Hannah Linville. He was a prominent real estate owner with extensive valley land and lived in Independence before passing. Funeral services at the Presbyterian church today with A L Keeney directing include a Christian Science reading and a soloist. One of four children, surviving daughter Mrs C A Gray.

Dallas The Polk county jail is manned again after months. Deputies chased and arrested Edward Dornicht with two pints of moonshine whiskey sold to J. W. Powell and Walter Baker at the old Butler store dance hall near Grand Ronde. Dornicht pleaded guilty to selling liquor and was fined $850 plus costs. Powell and Baker pleaded guilty to possessing liquor and were fined $12.60 each.

Samuel Edgar Owen born August 10 1865 in Bellville Ohio died at home after a paralytic stroke. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church with Rev Long officiating and burial in Odd Fellows cemetery. He lived in Independence over 30 years and was active in business. Survivors include wife Anna Mackey and three daughters.

Prune Prices Rise Across Sizes In Oregon
The Oregon Growers' Cooperative association raises the price on 30-40 prunes by half a cent per pound to 12 3 4 cents for 25 pound boxes. Earlier increases covered all sizes from 2 cents on 20-30 to 3 4 of a cent on petites, with buyers active and three quarters of a million pounds sold since the new year. Scarcity in red and canned fruits supports the move and jobbers report light supply as shelves demand replenishment.

Civil War Veteran W A Haley Found Dead in Marion County
Civil war veteran W A Haley, 83, was found dead in his small riverbank home on the Marion county side between 2 and 3 pm Wednesday. Born in West Virginia in 1889, he moved to Oregon from Arkansas in 1911 and lived alone until his death. Survived by one son, B R Haley.
